ELT Regional Seminars

In December 2008 ELTIS hosted two regional ELT Seminars, one in East Java and one in NTB. The theme of the Seminars was ‘Implementing Communicative English Language Teaching in MTs

Classrooms’. The participants were beneficiary teachers from ELTIS’s Phase 1 districts, who are currently undertaking ELU and CELTT courses, as well as ELTIS Master Trainers and some Guest

Speakers.

Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono from the State University of Malang and Des Kearney from IALF Bali presented Plenary Sessions

on Teaching Integrated Skills by Principles of Communicative

Language Teaching.

Presenters for the parallel sessions were Master Trainers and recent graduates from the CELLT Training modules in both provinces. For many of them it was the first time they had presented at a Seminar. They shared short papers or workshops on what they have achieved during the ELTIS training program.

It is hoped that the opportunity to present at the ELTIS Regional Seminar will build their confidence to consider presenting at national ELT seminars and conferences in the future, with funding from their schools and local DepAg offices.

ELTIS Workshops for Madrasah

Principals and Supervisors

In cooperation with the provincial authorities, ELTIS conducted

3-day workshops for Madrasah Principals and School Supervisors

from its Phase 1 districts in East Java and NTB. 247 participants

from Bondowoso, Situbondo and Probolinggo attended the workshop in East Java, and 190 from Mataram, West and Central Lombok attended the one in NTB.

The two workshops included input sessions specifically related

to the ELTIS training model, namely, Media in English Language

Teaching; Teachers and Learners – Revisiting our Perceptions; Teaching English in the Islamic Context; and Implementing a Communicative English Language Teaching Model. In addition, working in conjunction with ELTIS partners and representatives from LAPIS partner activities, the training incorporated sessions on MAPENDA Policy, School-Based Management and looked at the challenges and solutions related to implementing the KTSP Curriculum. The Pusat Studi Wanita (PSW) at IAIN Sunan Ampel and IAIN Mataram also provided input on Gender and School Management and Gender & the Teaching– Learning Process.

Drs. Sholikin, the ELTIS Islamic Schools Adviser invited the

workshop participants to give their suggestions on how best to revitalize Teacher Support Groups in their respective districts. Working with Rahma Diana Sari, the ELTIS Curriculum & Materials

Adviser, the participants were also invited to provide feedback on

the content for the ELTIS Resource Packs, in particular the Islamic

Life pack.

Feedback from the workshop evaluations was positive, with

Principals and Supervisors welcoming the opportunity to meet together and share experiences. They commented that they have a clearer understanding of what ELTIS is doing with their teachers and

feel better able to support their English teachers when they return to their schools after following ELTIS training programs. They have requested regular follow-up workshops to include input on School Office Management, the PAKEM study method and Materi Rencana

Kerja Madrasah (RKM).

A THREE-DAY WORKSHOP ON

MATERIALS WRITING FOR ISLAMIC LIFE

RESOURCE PACK

The materials designed for Islamic Life Resource Pack should

reflect the Islamic lives and have been divided into several themes :

(1) Lessons from the Qur’an and Hadits, (2) Stories from the Islamic

Traditions, (3) Muslims Around the World, and (4) Famous Muslims

Personalities – Achievements and Contributions.

ELTIS has formed a Materials Writing Team to design materials for this Islamic Life Resource Pack comprising four ELTIS Master Trainers: Ahmad Dzo’ul Milal, Umi Mahmudah, Purni Susanto and Ria Yuliana. In addition to knowing Islam well, the writers of this pack also have to understand Islamic lives, especially those covered in the themes above. On 1st – 3rd December 2008, the two ELTIS Curriculum & Materials Advisers, Sholikin, the ELTIS Islamic Schools Adviser, and the appointed team held a three-day workshop on materials writing for the Islamic Life Resource Pack in ELTIS Bali.

The workshop resulted in 8 worksheets which consisted of simple reading texts with a variety of tasks and activities, accompanied by comprehensive teacher’s notes and answer keys.

Business meetings

A lot of businessmen pass through different trials during the period they are dealing with the launch and development of their company. Even if you are used to daily meetings, you will discover that for business meetings with clients and for signing contracts you need lots of strategies and abilities.

True stories can demonstrate the fact that you kept in mind your client’s needs. Prepare for every quality and ability a demonstrative story. It’s preferable to tell a story that talks to the client about the benefits the rest of your clients and consumers have.

Provide efficient solution and act on time! Assuming you prepared very well and you used the observations efficiently, now you have reached the moment when you can ask directly the things you are interested in. This is important and it must not be missed. Some people organize great meeting but when it comes to closing the deal they leave home bear handed. When getting to this, you must have the strength to act and go on with it.

Business : Selling Product Online

For very little cost, you can sell a product online that hasn’t been selling well offline. Once it is set up, it takes virtually no work to maintain and monitor. Even if you only get a few sales a month, it is money that you wouldn’t have otherwise!

Let me give an example from my own experience. Back before I took my first business online, I advertised my book, “Secrets of Buying and Building Your Specialty Car on a Small Budget,” in “kit car” magazines (there were only two) for three years, and made a full-time income doing so. After a while, the ad rates jumped too high and the market was getting saturated with my product, (I was the only person writing a book on such a subject) so it just wasn’t worth running the ads anymore.

I put the same book on a simple web page, did a few reciprocal links with related kit car sites, and announced my presence on the two kit car e-mail discussion lists. The result? It still brings in over $1,000 per month automatically. I don’t do anything to maintain it (I haven’t touched it or even paid attention to it in over 2 years), and it still generates $1,000 in profit every month. It’s not much, but I don’t do any real work for it.

It is an old book that was not profitable, and not being advertised anymore offline, but because I put it on the Net, it now earns me $1,000 on autopilot each and every month. It’s not a lot of money, but it is icing on the cake. If you can get a few products like this, you can generate a full-time income very easily.

Be prepared to change your advertising concept a little and adapt it to the Internet. For example, in the kit car business, the customers are what marketers call “picture people.” In magazines, using pictures in your ads increases the cost of the advertising. On the Internet, though, because there is basically unlimited space, you can really take advantage of images. In fact, when I advertise in newsgroups, I let everyone know that there are a ton of pictures on my site. Just having images at your site is a way of getting traffic. This pitch enticed kit car enthusiasts to come and check my site out. The philosophy is to give the target market what they want.

NETWORK KOMPUTER

Computer network is a system consisting of computers and other network devices such as cables, switch, hub, router, etc. working together to achieve a common goal. The purpose of the computer network are: – Sharing resources functions such as shared use of printers, CPU, RAM, hard drive – Communication: eg electronic mail, instant messaging, chat – Access to information: for example web browsing In order to achieve the same goal, each part of the computer network and provide service request (service). Party requesting the service is called a client (client) and that provide services called the servant (the server). This architecture is called client-server systems, and is used in almost all computer network applications.

As for the classification of computer network based on the scale include: – Personal Area Network (PAN) – Campus Area Network (CAN) – Local Area Network (LAN) – Metropolitant Area Network (MAN) – Wide Area Network (WAN) – Global Area Network (GAN) Based on the function: Basically every computer network is functioning as a client and server. But there is a network that has a dedicated computer as a server and the other as a client. There is also a computer that has no special function as a server only. Therefore, based on their function there are two types of computer networks: • Client-server Network is the computer with a dedicated computer as a server.

A service / service can be provided by a computer or more. An example is a domain like www.detik.com lots served by the web server computer. In this topology, data communication can be disrupted if a single point impaired.

Tree Network Topology 5 (tree) network topology is referred to as multilevel network topology.
